Course background and definitions: Environmental History is about studies of the interactions between humans and nature in the past and how nature have Influenced humans and how humans have affected nature (Oosthoek, 2005).You will find a good introduction to what Environmental History is in this reference: K. Jan Oosthoek (2005), What is Environmental History? 

The scope and width of Environmental History globally is enormous, but in this course we try to select different topics on different levels, which should give you a good introduction to Environmental History, from different perspectives.

Main course competences: The main goal of the course is that the student, after a completed course, will have a better understanding of why the world looks like it does today, from an environmental perspective. When we understand our history and the past we can make analysis and conclusions and in the best cases we can avoid making similar mistakes again or we can perhaps also foresee potential upcoming challenges and find better solutions for environmental problems in the future.

  • The Time Line of Environmental History
  • Rachel Carson and the Environmental Movement
  • Environmental History of the Baltic Sea
  • Global History of Energy and Air Pollution
  • The Anthropocene and Human Induced Biodiversity Change
  • History of Pollination and of Bees and other Pollination Insects
  • The Time before the Brundtland Report, to the Rio Conference, to the Paris Agreement, to the Global Goals and the Agenda 2030
  • Major Global, National, Regional and Local Environmental Achievements (chosen cases)


No previous prerequisites.


The course will be graded fail/pass and all assignments and projects must be completed and approved with written reports and oral presentations during Team meetings for the final grade.

Opintojakson työskentelytavat ja aikataulutus

Working methods: The course is 100% virtual, will be supported by a specific moodle site and also regular Team meetings, which means that you can study at any place in the world where you have access to a computer and the Internet and are able to join Teams meetings.

In this course you will investigate different topics related to environmental history and make different assignments and projects.

Timetable:  The duration of the course is 28th of September (Course Introduction, Teams meeting) until December 14th (Final Project presentations and Evaluation in Teams)
