Course description: 

On this course you will learn the processes related to calf management and welfare. You will learn to observe, evaluate and develop on-farm calf management practices.

Objectives:
Student is familiar with the physiology and behaviour of calves. Student knows the processes related to calf management and their impact on welfare of the calves. Student is able to observe, evaluate and develop the calf management process in enterprises.

Environment, conditions and buildings
Health care.

The course is for students who are interested in animal husbandry methods and are familiar with the typical cattle management practices in Finland.

Working methods and scheduling: -Online studies -Inquiry-based learning with the help of lecture recordings and online materials -On-farm assignment with a stakeholder enterprise -Presentation of the project work in a seminar
Assessment: 
Calf Management and Welfare 5 Cr (Grading Scale 1-5) consists of: Optimal Calf Management Process 2 Cr (Grading Scale 1-5) Calf Management Plan for a Stakeholder Enterprise 3 Cr (Grading Scale 1-5).
Info: This course is carried out in part of a project called DLB - Digitalisaatiolla luonnonvarat biotalouteen, which is high education development project funded by Ministry of Education and Culture.
Earlier education: Student is familiar with the high school level biology studies or has secondary school competences. Student is familiar with the typical cattle management practices in Finland.
