The course includes shorter independent assignments and longer team work assignments. The shorter assignments are independent writing tasks that each last for one week. The tasks include text comprehension, summarisation, interactive communication and information search. There is also one longer team work assignment, which lasts for three weeks. This team work assignment includes writing in teams, which consists of the design, writing and finalizing phases. (Team members have different roles such as the information searcher, the writer, and the proof-reader.) The longer assignment is based on information searched and selected from the Internet by the student. In addition, the Optima learning environment has a selection of web links for self study.
During the course the students are required to communicate with the tutor and each other using the tools provided by Optima environment. All students are also requested to post their texts to the common discussion rooms of the course, for the purpose of peer commenting and evaluation.
Each assignment is evaluated separately and the weighted mean average (the Final Essay is ¼ of the final grade) of the grades forms the final grade of the course. The criteria for assessment follow the Common European Framework of Languages and, specifically, the framework of writing skills. An important part of the assessment is also the student’s team work skills and activity in discussion. The tutor gives the grade for the course.”
