Experiential learning and society (Master's level)

Course description

Experiential learning and society (5 ECTS, Master’s level) aims to develop students’ understanding of the theoretical framework, foundations and principles of experiential learning and experiential and adventure education. The course focuses on current discussions and research, examining the meaning of and opportunities for experiential learning and adventure education. Course participants explore the relevance of experiential learning and adventure education in contemporary societies.

The online course will be organized in English which enables an international learning environment.

Key contents

• The history, philosophy, traditions, and essential theoretical concepts of experiential education and learning and adventure education
• The rationale, principles and processes of instruction
• Current discussions and research.

Target group

The course is intended for both students and professionals in youth work, NGO work, education and schooling, rehabilitation, social work, and sports and physical education who wish to strengthen their theoretical and research and development competence in experiential learning and adventure education. Prior studies in community education or adventure education are not required, however degree studies in these fields are recommended and will provide useful background for the course.

Objectives

Students:

• Understand the key perspectives of the theoretical frame of reference of experiential education and learning and adventure education
• Examine current discussions and research on experiential learning and adventure education
• Demonstrate knowledge of the practical and theoretical aspects of experiential learning and adventure education
• Critically evaluate the potential, relevance, and applicability of experiential learning and adventure education in different professional fields, environments, and communities
• Reflect on developing expertise in the context of experiential learning and adventure education.

Prerequisites

The participants should be willing to listen, read, write and speak English. This Master’s level (EQF 7) course equals 5 ECTS (1 ECTS credit point equals about 27 study hours).

Course way of working and time table

Online course which includes webinars, independent study, individual and group assignments, a learning and/or development task.

It is strongly recommended to attend the webinars, which are held as follows (Finnish time):

• 29.01.2024 at 15.00-17.00
• 12.02.2024 at 15.00-18.00
• 29.02.2024 at 15.00-18.00
• 11.03.2024 at 15.00-18.00
