Finnish Language and Culture

Course description

This is a 0-level course for beginners with no or hardly any Finnish skills. Students know the basic vocabulary, grammar and phrases of the Finnish language. They are able to tell and write about themselves using simple expressions and to communicate in simple everyday situations. Furthermore, the students are acquainted with Finland as a country and also have a better understanding of the Finnish way of life.

This course provides students with an introduction to Finland and the Finnish language and culture:

• greetings and basic phrases
• numbers
• introducing and telling about oneself (name, address, age, country, nationality, language skills), family members and housing
• some expressions of time (weekdays, months, seasons, telling time)
• weather
• simple everyday situations, e.g. shopping and asking prices
• grammar, e.g. personal pronouns, possessive construction, verb conjugation, question and negative sentence, partitive case, genitive, local cases
• main features of the spoken language
• basic information about Finland and Finnish culture

Prerequisites

No previous Finnish studies required

Assessment criteria

The presentation, the written and spoken exams: 0-5; the study journal: pass – fail

Course way of working and time table

Independent studies. Introduction to the course via Teams on 9 June at 9 AM will be recorded. Students must submit their presentations by 16 July. Those who haven’t submitted their presentations by the deadline cannot continue in the course and will be unenrolled.

Course additional info

Compulsory tests and assignments must be submitted by the given deadlines and in the given order. Students must pass the following parts: compulsory tests and assignments, a video presentation on the county and culture (in English), a study journal video on the presentations of the course, spoken and written exam.

Ilmoittautuminen sähköisellä lomakkeella avautuu 13.3.2023 klo 8.00. Opintojakso on maksuton läsnäoleville tutkinto-opiskelijoille, avoimen amk:n polkuopiskelijoille sekä ammatillisten opettajakorkeakoulujen opiskelijoille ja vaihto-opiskelijoille. Avoimen AMK:n yksittäisiä opintojaksoja suorittaville opiskelijoille opintojakso on maksullinen (10€/opintopiste). Maksullisena opintojaksolle ilmoittautumiseen on oma ilmoittautumislomake, joka julkaistaan 13.3.2023 tämän sivun yläosassa.

The courses are free of charge for degree students at universities of applied sciences and for Open Studies’ path students. Also students from schools of professional teacher education and exchange students may select courses and complete the courses free of charge. The enrollment period begins on 13th March at 8 am.
