Introduction to GIS in Bioeconomy

Course description

Bioeconomy is largely based on spatial data concerning the quantity and quality of various resources. Professionals within the bioeconomy sector often have to make decisions where spatial thinking ability is necessary. Therefore GIS (Geographical Information Systems, paikkatietojärjestelmät) can be seen as an important decision support system tool for planning and monitoring of ecosystem services, the built environment, transport services, etc.

This online course is an introduction to GIS, primarily for students in the bioeconomy and environmental sectors. You will learn how to use tools and methods that helps you handle, visualize, analyze and share geographical information in your work.

Target group: Intermediate level – degree program – bioeconomy

Prerequisites

Basic in data management of some sorts such as Excel

Assessment criteria

The course is practice oriented and includes a number of exercises, based on open data and open source software that the student can download for free. As a general rule, exercises will result in maps, some of which are to be uploaded in PDF format for evaluation and feed-back from the teacher.

Course way of working and time table

Time: 15.1–20.4.2024 There will be online lectures and projects.

Online classes Mondays and Thursdays 18 January–7 March At 14.00–15.30 (usually 60 min of lecture, leaving 30 min open for practices, questions, tips or advice).

The students will be sent an invitation to the meeting approximately a week before the course starts.

All lectures are recorded, which means that they can be watched afterwards. It is strongly recommended to take part in the real time lectures.

 

Course info

We will download all materials (software, etc.) needed during the first sessions. The Webex app is needed for the course.
