Puhutsä suomee? How to understand and use spoken Finnish?

Course description

This online course provides you with the basic knowledge of spoken Finnish, used in Helsinki area. You will learn the main differences between written and spoken Finnish and get a lot of practice in producing spoken variant of Finnish yourself.  There are 5 modules to be completed in given order. The material consists of tutorials, audio and video material, independent exercises (both written and oral), group work, assignments and tests. The main goal of this online course is to encourage you to use more Finnish in your everyday life and to help you to understand and use spoken variant of Finnish, used in Capital Region of Finland.

Contents MODULE 1

  • Topics: me and my family, in cafeteria
  • Spoken Finnish grammar and vocabulary: personal pronouns, allegro speech forms for the verb olla, numbers, possessive structure (Mulla on…)

Contents MODULE 2

  • Topics: writing a message, going to movies, plans for weekend
  • Spoken Finnish grammar and vocabulary: conjugating the verbs in WE-form (Me puhutaan), demonstrative pronouns, allegro speech forms for the verbs mennä, tulla, lähteä

Contents MODULE 3

  • Topics: one’s opinion, free time and hobbies, housing
  • Spoken Finnish grammar and vocabulary: some additional verb forms, nesessive structure (Mun täytyy…), the ARI-words (makkari, synttärit, kuohari)

Contents MODULE 4

  • Topics: travelling (asking the way, buying tickets, telling about one’s trip)
  • Spoken Finnish grammar and vocabulary: perfect tense, some loan words

Contents MODULE 5

  • Topics: health and sickness, booking an appointment on phone, telling about one’s past
  • Spoken Finnish grammar and vocabulary: past tense verb forms (active and passive voice), MA-infinitive (Mä meen nukkuun.)

Prerequisites

This course is aimed at non-native Finnish speakers with at least 15 credits of Finnish language studies with good grades in UAS or university.

Assessment criteria

Students’ performance is graded on the following scale: Excellent (5), Very good (4), Good (3), Satisfactory (2), Fair (1), Fail (0). Active self study and regular learning-assignments (including assessment of one’s own learning and feedback).

Course way of working and time table

Virtual course. Independent online studies (using Moodle platform). Self-stufy material, learning videos and audios, online exercises, assignments and online exams. You need access to the internet, a web camera and a microphone. Notice that this implementation includes only the spoken variant used in the capital region of Finland.
