Sustainable use of lithium batteries in transportation and energy storage

07.09.2023 - 29.05.2024

Course description

The aim of the course is to learn to understand the applications of mains battery storage and battery-powered electric cars. We will learn how to achieve sustainable development in these applications and how the carbon footprint, life cycle, recyclability and safety of lithium batteries are taken into account.

Content:

The course is divided into five different learning areas.

  1. Lithium battery life cycle and recycling. The issues to be addressed are the size class of lithium batteries used in electric storage and battery powered electric vehicles (BEV).
  2. Battery powered electric vehicles (BEV). This exercise will focus on cars, trucks and public transport as buses and trams.
  3. Lithium battery as a load balancer in the electricity grid. The exercise focuses on the business model and battery solutions used as electricity storage.
  4. Lithium battery spontaneous combustion and fire hazard. The issues to be addressed are thermal runaway and the resulting burning or even explosion of the battery, not forgetting the fire control of a burning lithium battery.
  5. Battery powered electric vehicle (BEV) Carbon Footprint. The Focus in on how the BEV carbon footprint is formed during the value chain of lithium batteries.

Assessment criteria

Scale: 0-5.

The course evaluation consists of several Moodle sub-evaluations. The total score is the average of these sub-evaluations. Each part of the course must be passed.

Course way of working and time table

The course is conducted as an independent study.
