The course offers a wide and versatile language resource. The online tutor provides guidance on how language is noticed while learning, and he or she gives feedback on students’ language and communication. The course assignments emphasise language learning strategies and the dialogic aspect of language use. The assignments are tailored based on the findings of language needs studies that were recently conducted, and the assignments will be further detailed after the needs analysis of each course taker.
Tavoitteet: Students who have taken this course are able to communicate efficiently and fluently in the foremost interactive situations and related communicator roles in their globalised professional field. The students can write texts and written messages which demonstrate control of communicative situations and professional textual conventions. The students also efficiently access and summarise texts which are related to fields other than their own. The students have no significant lacks of using and understanding of grammatical structures and vocabulary.
The assignments cover the production and (peer and) teacher evaluation of written messages as well as language and communication strategies for simulated project meetings in work life. Communication and negotiation of meanings emphasise language as an event with a unique social context.
Please notice that he students are required to participate actively in the online sessions (AC) during the course. The dates and times for these sessions are provided by the online tutor in the beginning of the course.
Työskentelytavat ja aikataulutus:
The student’s general progress will be assessed and supported while taking the course. Each assignment of the course is evaluated separately. The weighted mean average of the grades will be the final grade of the course. The criteria for assessment follow the Common European Framework of Languages.”
Aikaisemmat opinnot: The course is well suited for prospective students who have control of their basic field-specific vocabulary in English and who seek to develop their confidence in communicative situations. Persons enrolling for this course should have knowledge of English that meets Level B2 of the Common European Framework. Thus, they should “understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation,” and they should be able to “interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.” Further, they should know how to “produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue.”
