Beskrivning
The aim of this course is to foster Sustainability thinking with perspectives from Finland. Finland has been leading the world in sustainability practices and its adaptation. The course would draw upon examples and practices of Finnish companies and consumers and give the learner an understanding of the sustainability principles and SDGs in a holistic manner. One of the highlights of this course is to explore how design thinking approach can be incorporated into sustainability practices to accelerate the pace of sustainable development. HAMK Design Factory is a front runner in this sphere and helps students, researchers and industry inculcate design thinking as a tool to develop sustainable products, solutions and thereby solve complex problems. (Jussila, J., et al, 2022).
Understanding sustainability thinking is important as corporates try to incorporate sustainable practices to address critical risks from climate change, for ethical considerations, to meet stakeholder commitments and gain sustainable competitive advantage. The learners would gain an understanding of how Finnish businesses develop and implement strategies to address climate change and promote sustainability through a design thinking approach. The learners would develop both a design thinking mindset as well learn the application of strategic sustainability tools in practice.

The teaching and learning strategy is designed to encourage students to think critically about sustainability, the context where they operate and consequent management strategies undertaken. The overall teaching and learning strategy is designed to foster the active and reflective engagement of students in the learning process. The principal teaching and learning method is a combination of lecture, tutorials and feedback sessions. Two-hour lecture slots are designed to illustrate and explain key theoretical concepts and debates in sustainability field. Each topic discussed during the lecture will be backed up by concrete business examples through the case studies, videos and guest lecturers. Tutorials are also designed to stimulate peer discussion on theoretical concepts with reference to specific cases or real-life examples. In order to encourage independent learning and provide additional support, we will organise feedback sessions. The role of feedback in the learning process (formative feedback) is to inform the student of where and how their learning and performance can be improved. In order to make sure that each student gets equal chances for additional feedback a spread sheet with 10 minutes time slots will be available for registration and booking on the HAMK Moodle platform for interaction through lecturers’ zoom meeting id and each student who wants to take this opportunity has to register and reserve their name under specific time slot.
