Learning objectives:

You are able to
– demonstrate an understanding of different definitions and the meaning of counselling, patient education, health promotion, adherence, compliance, self-management, and self-regulation
– understanding of the meaning of evidence based practice in patient education and counselling, also the cultural features
– analyse and evaluate health promotion, patient education and counselling in practice
– regognize and develop your own learning and counselling philosophy, style and competence
– familiar with evidence-based research articles in diabetes education and counselling
– adopt a reflective review to the deveploment of diabetes education and counselling

Study material:
The study material is availabale on eLearning platform. In these studies you will summarize research results by using e.g. Xamk’s library databases. You will also familiarize yourself with the diabetes care quidelines and practices in your own country.

Contents and methods:
This 5 cr online course includes three courses:

1. Evidence based diabetes education and counselling 2 cr
Objectives:
Student should be able to
– demonstrate an understanding of different definitions and the meaning of counselling, patient education, health promotion, adherence, compliance, self-management, and empowerment
– discuss of the cultural features in diabetes education and counselling

Requirements and evaluation:
1. Evidence based patient education and counselling – discussion will be assessed on passed/failed.
2. Evidence-based patient education -assignment will be assessed by grade (1-5).
3. Choosen article and a brief presentation of it in article discussion (peer evaluation).

2. Development of professional’s own counselling skills 2 cr
Objectives:
Student should be able to
– to use client education and counselling skills both in individual counseling as well as in group education
– to use knowledge of motivational interviewing as an educational method
– to use group education

Requirements and evaluation:
1. Experiencies discussion will be assessed on passed/failed
2. Motivational interviewing discussion will be assessed on passed/failed (at least two comments)
3. Final Task in group assignment will be assessed by grade (1-5).
4. Group education discussion will be assessed on passed/failed.

3. Research methods in diabetes education and counselling 1 cr
Objectives:
Student should be able to
– know the basic research methods
– evaluate and read the published diabetes education and counselling literature
– outline key principles of the research article

Requirements and evaluation:
1. Diabetes quideline and two research supporting it. Discussion. Passed/failed.
2. Assignment of Cochrane-article and discussion of Cochrane articles. Will be assessed by grade (1-5). At least one comment.
